Practice
Pick a key, create a chord progression in it, and record it into your DAW. Experiment with playing melodies over this progression. Pay attention to which melody notes are and aren't part of the chords they're being played with, and how they sound. Find places where you can resolve from a melody note that's outside of the chord to one that's in the chord.
Also try the above using the pentatonic major scale (a major scale with the 4th and 7th degrees removed), e.g., C Major: C-D-E-G-A).
